What is a Whiplash Injury?

This type of injury is most commonly associated in North America with Motor Vehicle Collisions. For example, you might hear someone say, “they got whiplash when their car was rear-ended by another car.”

What does this mean?

The term Whiplash can be confusing to most people. To be clear, the term Whiplash Injury will be used to describe how the injury occurs (a mechanism of injury). The injuries sustained from this whiplash movement range from sprains and strains of the neck, back, and shoulder girdle up to nerve injuries, herniated discs, and even fractures.

How it happens

The head is sitting on top of the neck, much like a ball on a stick. When an unexpected, jarring movement occurs, such as when you are hit from behind by another car, the weight of the head causes the neck to snap backward and forwards. This extreme movement is similar to the lash of a whip and can result in damage to the bones and soft tissues of the neck, which can be quite painful.

Not just a Motor Vehicle Collision

Although most often associated with motor vehicle collisions, this type of movement and injury can occur in work injuries or sports injuries.

Who should I see for my Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries?

This is a tough question most people face when trying to find a solution for their whiplash pain and injuries. We take the think out of that question.

Our team all works together under one roof, so it won’t matter who you begin with for your initial assessment. Our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and physicians are all experts at assessing your whiplash injury. Once accurately diagnosed, they will recommend the best care plan for you, and here is the best part: Because we are all under one roof, we can all talk to each other if your treatment plan requires more than one health practitioner to be involved.

You may require medication or injections from our physician, IMS and rehab from our physiotherapists and adjustments and soft tissue therapy from our chiropractor. Wouldn’t it be nice if all of your health care team worked together to support you?

Here is the good news

Your insurance often will fully cover the cost of your assessment and treatment with our chiropractors and physiotherapists if you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident. The good news is that we can direct bill your insurance, so you will not be out of pocket for any treatment expenses.

Here is the good news

Often persistent neck pain, back pain, and shoulder girdle pain can be the result of undiagnosed underlying neck weakness. Traditional rehabilitation methods and home exercise programs may be ineffective in specifically targeting the injured neck. The original injury may have healed, however ongoing weakness in the neck means it is vulnerable to further pain and injury.

A quick and easy test on our neck machine (MCU – Multicervical Unit) with one of our expert physiotherapists or chiropractors will diagnose whether undiagnosed weakness may be contributing to your ongoing neck pain, headaches, back pain or shoulder girdle pain.

More good news

If you do have neck weakness that is contributing to ongoing pain, the MCU is also the answer. Under the supervision of our expert physiotherapists and chiropractors, the neck machine allows for a customized specific rehabilitation strengthening program. Our research showed that people who had pain for more than eight years were able to double their neck strength and reduce their pain and disability by more than 60% over a six to an eight-week treatment plan.

Our Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, and Sports Medicine physicians can help you deal with your whiplash injury and pain in Calgary.
