Concussion
Your Choice for Calgary Concussion Care
Concussions, also called Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) can have serious long-term health consequences. Contact sports, Motor Vehicle Accidents and slips and falls where you bang your head can also result in concussion. You don’t actually have to hit your head to experience concussions. Your brain is actually quite fluid and mobile inside your skull so rapid movements of your head cause your brain to move quickly and then bang up against the inside of your skull bones. This can cause bruising of the brain, similar to if you banged your shin on a coffee table. That bruising results in concussion.

How do I know if I have a Concussion?
- Headaches or neck pain that will not go away
- Difficulty remembering, concentrating or making decisions
- Slowness in thinking, speaking, acting or reading
- Getting lost or easily confused
- Feeling tired all the time, having no energy or motivation
- Mood changes (feeling angry or sad for no particular reason)
- Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping more than normal or having ahard time sleeping)
- Light-headedness, dizziness or loss of balance
- Nausea or urge to vomit
- Increased sensitivity to lights, sounds or distractions
- Blurred vision or eyes that tire easily
- Loss of sense of smell or taste
- Ringing in the ears
If you experience some or all of these symptoms, you need to take them seriously and seek medical attention. Our team has expertise in proper assessment and treatment of concussion.
Don’t forget that it may not only be your head that was injured. Recent research has attributed many ongoing concussion-like symptoms to an undiagnosed neck injury. Often the neck is injured at the same time as the head but goes undiagnosed because all the attention is focused on the brain injury. Proper assessment of the neck, including a functional assessment on the MCU, can be the difference between continuing to suffer and full recovery.
